Pulau Tioman
The pear shaped Pulau Tioman (approx. 19 x 12 km or 12 x 7.3 miles) lies about 32 km
(20 miles) off the east coast of the Malaysia Peninsular. It is the ideal destination for
Singaporeans or for stop over travellers passing through Singapore. Much of its terrain is
steep and rocky. The highest point on the island is Gunung Kajang at 1,038m (3,406 ft.).
Closer to the south coast are some lower pinnacle peaks.
Set like a glittering
jewel amidst the South China Sea the largest of a group of 64 volcanic islands, Tioman
Island beckons the visitor with its white beaches and crystal clear azure seas. A sense of
excitement and mystery pervades the island and the visitor will be enchanted by the
picturesque beauty of this tropical paradise. Often regarded as the most beautiful place
to dive, Bahara Rock is home to a profusion of brightly coloured tropical fishes.
Magicienne Rock, named after HMS Magicienne, is a rock pinnacle protruding above the
surface, and surounded by reef plateau, it is a favourite resting place for manta ray,
reef sharks, barracudas and even whale sharks. Deeper diving is available at Chebeh, where
there are some interesting caves with lobsters, grouper and rays in residence., Good caves
and grotto dives can be found at Labas site. The best soft corals are found at golden reef
and there are some scattered formations at Sepoy.
